The German Energy Academy (GEA) in Jordan, in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), successfully launched the “GEA-IKI Project” at Al Hussein Technical University (HTU) on February 25, 2025. Supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the event marked a significant milestone in advancing renewable energy education and workforce development in Jordan.
The event was attended by key figures in the energy sector, emphasizing the collective commitment to enhancing Jordan’s renewable energy landscape. Representing the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), Eng. Yacoub Marar, Director for Energy Transition Directorate, highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing support for the German Energy Academy and its role in equipping young professionals with essential skills for the evolving energy market.
The role of GEA to build the bridge between German and Jordanian energy sector was further endorsed by Mr. Guido Kemmerling, the Deputy Ambassador of the German Embassy in Jordan, who expressed his enthusiasm for the new Phase and commended Jordan’s continuous strides in renewable energy, recognizing the nation as a key player in the regional energy transition. He ensured the German Embassy support for the Academy and its partners to strengthen the ties between
both countries.
The, speaking on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), Mr. Andreas Riessmann reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting the Academy, which would be funded in this new Phase for the next three years under the International Climate Initiative – the IKI Program, which focus on Global projects demonstrating positive impact in climate action. He emphasized the Ministry’s ongoing support and anticipation
for the Academy’s achievements in its next phase in increasing the awareness in climate related issues, by implementing trainings in
renewable energy and green economy.
As the host of the Academy, Prof. Ismail Al-Hinti, the President of Al Hussein Technical University, reflected on the Academy’s remarkable journey, recalling how it started as an idea just three years ago and has since expanded, reaching more individuals than expected and making a tangible impact on the lives
of its trainees. He emphasized that the Academy’s core mission is to enhance the employability of its trainees, ensuring they are
well-prepared for careers in the energy sector. He has expressed also his own vision of the Academy to become regionally recognized as Center
of Excellence in Energy trainings.
From her side as responsible from GIZ Jordan on implementing the project, Mrs. Christiana Hageneder, the Coordinator of Water & Energy Cluster,
spoke about the journey of the Academy and the preparation made in past year to reach to this important milestone. She reinforced the importance of founding partners of the German Energy Academy, who represented both academic and industrial sectors in Jordan and Germany, expressing optimism for the Academy’s future achievements in shaping a skilled and capable workforce serving the job market in Jordan, Germany and the region.
The event also featured testimonials from GEA trainees who shared their experiences and the impact of the Academy’s training on their career paths. The trainees, who are now working in leading engineering positions at various companies, have also showed their commitment and continuous support to the Academy and its future trainees, as they appreciated the opportunities given to them in the Phase one.
The launch concluded with a networking session and a group photo, signifying a shared vision for the future of renewable energy education and capacity building in Jordan. In a symbolic gesture, all participants signed a German-made solar panel, underscoring their commitment to sustainable energy development, and emphasizing on the bridge built between Germany and Jordan in the Energy Sector.
About the German Energy Academy
The German Energy Academy (GEA), established on October 26, 2021, was hosted by Al Hussein Technical University (HTU) to enhance renewable energy training in Jordan. It is supported by GIZ, the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) under the Jordanian-German Energy Partnership to elevate the level of vocational training in Jordan.
The Academy collaborates with leading institutions for academic, vocational, and industry engagement. The founding partners include from the Jordanian side, both Al Hussein Technical University (HTU), German-Jordanian University (GJU), as well as Amman Chamber of Industry (ACI), Electric Training Centre (ETC) of NEPCO, while at the German side, it is presented by the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK), the German Solar Association (BSW), and Ideas into Energy (IIE). Through these partnerships, GEA integrates German expertise into its training programs, equipping youth with the skills needed for the renewable energy sector.
